Aspect and Weather
This wall is in the shade in the morning. It is advised to start as early as possible. Once the sun hits the wall, hard climbing becomes quite taxing. Routes get wet when it rains.
Climbing
The main wall is divided in four sectors offering a variety of routes ranging from easy to hard. Generally the number of routes is limited by access through a low band of impenetrable roofs. The wall generally starts as fairly steep with some comfortable, welcome ledges higher up. Many routes finish with proper hard climbing up until the very last move.
Approach:
The trail to Tafelberg/Spout takes approximately 3hrs with a heavy pack. Follow the trail up Welbedacht Kloof (1hr). At the head of the kloof, turn right and follow the jeep track for a short distance until you see a path heading up to the left. Follow the ever steepening trail through a shale band and onto a higher plateau (1hr from the top of Welbedacht) You will now have a clear view of and Spout. Follow the trail, aiming for the neck between and Spout. Very near the top of the neck, keep a look out for Spout Cave on your right. (1hr from the top of the shale band).
Descent:
The descent to all the routes on the Main Wall is down the Gully Route which lies on the south east side of the massif.
The Thread the Needle Gully on the far left of the wall can also be used as a descent, but involves some tricky scrambling and 1 short abseil off a peg.
Walk in the direction of the Spout, trending slightly to the left. You will find cairns indicating the way to the top of the descent gully. The top of the gully is steep and requires a few steps to descend before you reach a chain to climb down into the gully proper. The bottom of this chain section is tricky and has been known to be too iced to allow passage. Once on the sandy base of the gully (the bottom of the Comes a Time Wall) head right and squeeze through between the wall and a boulder. Walking down rough boulders gains the bottom of the descent gully. A 10 minute walk from here takes you back to Spout Cave.
