Namibia is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa, owing to its pristereen wilderness and helped by very low population density and low crime. Good infrastructure and great reserves/lodges add to the appeal.

Windhoek itself does not offer much in the way of tourist attraction or adventure tourism (aside from being atop the worlds largest underground lake), but provides the access hub for the region - whether you are going to The Skeleton Coast, Spitzkoppe, The Kgalahari or Sossusvlei, Windhoek is the best place to start.

Driving from CApe Town or Johannesburg is roughly the same effort and time depending on where you are going.

The mountains and crags of Namibia offer truly wild adventures due to their remoteness and the tiny local population and will leave you forever changed after a visit. Unfortunately the local climbing or hiking community is too small to guarantee meeting partners by just showing up at the crag, however a little effort online will connect you with a welcoming and eager group to go out with.

Seasons:

The Desert and Semi Desert Climate means that from an adventure / climbing point of view the dominant considerations for us are avoiding the heat .

Summer (Nov-Apr):

Almost unbearably hot the summer days are long but hot.

Autumn  (Apr-May):

The closer you get to winter the better with the nights beginning to get quite chilly.

Winter (Jun-July):

The best season for any outdoor activity, the mornings are crist, the days pleasant and the nights surprisingly chilly (be prepared).

Spring (Aug-Oct):

Similar to Autumn, the low rainfall means that there is virtually no difference between the two.

Travel:

Namibia is a very sparsely populated region so any travel neds to account for bein able to survive a break-down in the desert for some time. Public transport to the adventure-sport area's is virtually non existent and most visitors will use a 4x4 or similar vehicle that has clearance and packign space.

Shopping:

Grocery shopping is by-and-large good, even in the smaller towns, but and special diets (even vegetarian is difficult) will require pre-planning logistically. Adventure Sport items will almost certainly not be found in Namibia, and camping Gas possibly only in Namibia (pack a multi fuel / liquid fuel stove).
